How graphic designers usually bill

Charge per project or per deliverable, with a set number of revision rounds included and extra rounds priced separately.

What to put on your invoice

  • Your business name and contact details (and company number if you are a limited company)
  • Your client's name and address, and their PO or project reference
  • A unique invoice number, for example INV-OCT-001
  • Issue date, due date and payment terms
  • A clear description, quantity and price for each line
  • Tax, only if you are registered, with the rate and amount
  • How to pay: a card payment link and your bank details

Tips to get paid faster

  • State the licence or usage rights that transfer on payment.
  • Say that files are released on payment, and keep to it.
  • Use an estimate with a deposit so the client commits before you start.

Questions people ask

When should a designer send an invoice?

Send the deposit invoice on acceptance and the balance when the final files are approved, before you hand over the source files.

Should I charge for revisions?

Include a fixed number of revision rounds in the price, then invoice extra rounds at an agreed rate. Put that on your estimate.
